I think the proper term for the Silver Eagle is not 'coin' since it wasn't produced for public use and since we've been off the silver standard for decades. I think any 'mint error' on something like that is nonsense and creates a false premium that benefits the Seller but not the Buyer ( unless of course the World turns into a Village Idiot Convention ). I worked as a buyer in the numismatic field for 15 years when legitimate errors on actual coins had a valid market value. I watched companies like Franklin Mint produce a long range of 'investments' with no return other than silver weight.

I will stop calling Silver Eagles coins when the United States Mint and almost EVERY other dealer in the country stops calling them coins. The silver standard has nothing to do with a coin being a coin? Also, the Eagle DOES have a $1.00 face value but I don't think you'll see anyone spending them.

This coin is not rare because of the error, it's rare because of it's low mintage. I'm sure everyone who purchased a 1995W Proof for less than $1,000.00 would agree. Also, the Silver Eagle program is and will be extremely popular with collectors. If a collector wants a complete set of Eagles, they will have to have one of these.

Only 36 years experience here (27 as a buyer) so I my be totally wrong.

There is no way anyone should or would compare the Silver Eagle with a Franklin Mint product.

Don't mean to offend anyone... this is my two cents.

No offense taken, Ben. But your 30 years experience would have taught you the same things I learned in a shorter period of time. The Silver Eagle is simply another cash cow and because of that it's not hard to compare it or its ilk to products from Franklin Mint.

Thanks for not taking offense to my comments.

I will add... I don't carry or push Eagles as a norm. In addition to two of these, I only have 3 PCGS Eagles and 6 raw Eagles in stock.

This one caught my eye as a good investment due to low mintage. And, the variation is neat too.

Ben, I never take offense at criticism. People like you and I are so full of opinions that if we could get a buck for each one we would own an island in the calm Pacific, loaded with nubile enchantresses who wait at our beck and call. Usually we can't get enough for a cup of coffee.

My consistent feeling towards any investor is that no matter what I wish them well at their endeavor.

I hate to step in between the two of you, but let me share with you my opinion (this is one of six I have every morning before breakfast), which naturally enough, for the purposes of this discussion, will become the definitive opinion.

They're coins, the silver eagles, non-circulating but coins to be sure, but still coins. They are statutorily denominated at a face value and annualized by date. This means they are more than your average "no-value" "no-date" silver round. They were issued to satisfy American demand for bullion. The coin itself did not create a false market; it responded to an existing market where the U.S. Mint wanted to play, as well..

The really good news is, come the economic collapse we've all been promised since the early 1970's, eagle hoarders will be able to buy food with real hard money and the rest of us won't.
