Thread: Listing Title and Author

When I'm doing a search for something specific I'll try different combinations but after a few searches, if nothing comes up, I would just give up and look somewhere else.

Making it as easy as possible for people to find your auction would improve sellers sales I would think.

Absolutely! That's why it's so useful to know how other people go about looking for stuff. I write my listings so that I could find them, but I also try to do it so others can find them, of course. But does one succeed? The more info' the better our chances!

Just seems to me that title and author are always going to be the main thing to search for in books....you can always add signed or first edition in the secondary search with description included. Even long titles can be shortened sensibly, and authors last name only often works too.
I think it's getting better on here anyway. Let's hope.

Another example of the books listings: http://uk.three.ebid.net/perl/auctio...674&mo=auction

Every auction I noticed by this seller is without author or photo. And even the titles don't seem to me to be complete. What do you think?

    That's weird.
I always put in both title and author for fiction. For non fiction it is often just the title as these can be long.

When listing fiction I always use full book title & author in my listing title where possible, I also add if it's part of a series if there is room.

I don't think the seller whose item you've shown is serious about selling here.
They are showing as a buyer , so I'm guessing haven't kept their card details up to date, & as their listings are run til sold, they haven't been pulled yet!
Their listings are all in the wrong category.
Books, Comics & Magazines > Other
& given the starting price of many of their items is 1p with the £2.75 p & p I'm guessing it's a bulk upload with details copied from their amazon listings.
I wonder if their customer service is as sloppy?

Looks like you are right Gothicina. Sadly I seem to see alot of this in books (and other categories as well really). Sellers that just dumped their inventory here but never came back to check on it. All with similar circumstances - run until sold, low prices, no real info. in the listings, wrong categories (though maybe all that was available when they first listed?). I don't really like going through so many worthless listings when I'm searching for something that the search engine won't recognize (numbers, punctuation, etc.).
I'm selling as well as buying, so not too bothered by the inactive sellers much as I can better spot them now and just ask questions if they seem to be absent. But I do wonder about new buyers.
Do you think it puts new buyers off? Or is it better having the higher number of listings?

The 55 character limit on ebid auction titles is a real pain here, some of my listings don't show the authors name because i've run out of space with the book title!

I have the same problem, but when I'm searching for long titles I will search including the description, so if the title and author are in the listing someplace it will usually show up.
I have noticed that certain punctuation doesn't work here though - Angela's Ashes was one example - nothing comes up in searches, but there are several copies listed. If you take out the apostrophe in Angela's in your listing, it shows up in searches (even if you search with the apostrophe)! So now I'm taking out extra punctuation in the title, but putting it in the description. It gives me a few more spaces too.
