Thread: What's the best antivirus / security software?

  1. #41

I had problems with all the main anti-virus programs.

Norton, McAfee and Kaspersky all tried to prevent me from running perfectly ok programs (like Sybase and JBuilder for instance), and the crowning glory ended up with Kaspersky refusing to allow me to open up an html file that I'd written myself!

At that point I gave up, because I'd never had a genuine virus anyway. I had Ubuntu on the desktop and am careful what gets opened or visited on the laptop. I've not had any trouble at all, I've done a couple of online scans on the Symantec website to confirm to myself that I haven't got anything, so everything is just peachy with no anti-virus whatever.

Out of all the firewalls I have tried I have never found any better than Comodo its Free and has great features that I have not seen on most paid versions. Seems to be one of the most popular and have the best reviews.

Comodo also has a fully featured Internet Security package available for Free (firewall and virus software).

In general I hardly ever run anti-virus software on my Mac, there is a built-in firewall but as I'm behind a NAT router I feel fairly safe anyway.

I dare say that if I were to install one of the popular linux distros on a PC I probably wouldn't bother with anti-virus software there either. Being behind a good hardware firewall and being careful what you download and run are always going to be better than any anti-virus software for keeping your computer safe.

This is turning into a really useful thread, illustrating that you can protect whatever setup you have for free if you take a little time to look in to what's available, and nearly all the tried and tested scanners etc. have been mentioned.

However, as implied in SalusLibrorum's case, a bit of commonsense over paranoia wins every time. The type of folk here on eBid are focussed on their businesses/real life, and are very unlikely to accidentally download a virus from a webpage, which are usually embedded in pron pics/vids, gaming cracks/cheats from personal game sites, and music files from peer-to-peer networks.

With the second route used by scripts kids and designers of worms and trojans, the old advice of never opening an email, or an email attachment, when you don't recognise its source/sender will easily keep your machine trouble free without an email scanner constantly running in the background.

    Hi Huddy,
Have never had this problem myself but if you Google "lost recycle bin" there are plenty of helpful articles depending on your operating system.
    Good luck,
    Paul.
Take a look at my Auctions - more being added all the time:

I recently learned of a really interesting little tool called TweakUIPowerToy, it's made by Microsoft and lets you twiddle loads of little things to do with the interface, may be worth a shot to get your Recycle Bin back on the desktop.

There's a list of Power Toys here:
