Hello again - I've dumped Norton and loaded the free AVG software to give it a try out. But I'm still experiencing the same problems of extreme difficulty in accessing the internet. I've tried everything I can think of - but I am not very good at all this techie stuff. If anyone has any good ideas about how I might deal with this, please help.....

I think Norton is well and truly gone as I downloaded Norton's own uninstaller and ran it 3 times just to be sure and yes it was a pain. I am cheesed off as all I seem to do is tinker with the PC trying to get easy access to the Internet, when I should be listing......even when I am connected I often get the "internet explorer has encountered a problem and must close" so I lose everything - grhhhhh!!!

    Default AVG 8 is evil

Hmm, sounds like you would just love a Mac! Safari very rarely quits on me, same for Firefox (there will always be odd occasions when a website causes an infinite loop in some badly written javascript, that sort of thing). Virtually no threat from viruses on the Mac either, so no need for anti-virus or anti-spyware slowing things down.

On the subject of anti-virus software I have to object to AVG 8, and recommend that everyone stop using it, or at least configure the LinkScanner component to be disabled. It is causing havoc and is the reason eBid was down recently due to a DoS attack - it was the AVG8 LinkScanner that caused the problems (being innocently run by thousands of people who may not even have been looking at the eBid site).

A friend of mine who tried AVG 8 has bought Zone Alarm instead, which is apparently just as good or better than AVG, certainly easier to get on with and faster than AVG 8 by the sounds of things.

    Some advice on AVG 8:

    Lynda - I have PM'd you.

Heatemyfather - I've read the links on AVG, thanks. I'll have a look at removing those features.
    Thanks
