Dear All,

I'm a new user, just listed some SGI computer items (motherboards,
RAM, CPU, etc.) Since there's no dedicated SGI category, I had to
list them in the relevant "Other" category for general PC/Mac items,
ie. rather messy.

There are not many people listing SGI things as yet (as I type,
I think I'm the only one), but I intend to help change that as I will
advertise eBid widely (see my other post for details). Thus,
may I ask, would it be possible to have a dedicated category for
SGI (Silicon Graphics) items please? This would mean such things
would not clog up the categories which are normally used for selling
PC/Mac systems/parts, etc. If you want to know what SGIs are, please
see my site for details, or contact me directly.

I'm sure you might think this request rather cheeky given I'm
a new user, but I'm just thinking ahead. On eBay it's always a
pain searching for SGI items (just as I'm sure it's equally tricky
for those searching for SUN Microsystems items, or HP, DEC,
etc.) because searches also bring back lots of useless references,
in particular Stargate auctions (people using 'SGI' instead of
'SG1'), Audi car parts, various makes of power drill made in
Germany that use the name 'SGI', etc.

To give you some idea, an eBay search on SGI normally brings
back about 250 genuine auctions at any one time. Would be
a fair bit more than that if I was listing things aswell, but I never
have for the reasons given in my other post.

Along similar lines, I should imagine those who like to browse
through the general PC/Mac categories would be happy not to
have to wade through results that aren't relevant to them.
Indeed, speaking more generally, and with the expectation that
eBid will grow, I would recommend new categories for all these
non-PC/Mac systems, ie. SGI, SUN, HP, DEC and IBM.

Of course, sometimes an item does share something in common
with PCs/Macs, eg. PS2 keyboards and mice, certain types of
RAM module, etc. But a seller always has the option of adding
an extra category to their listing - I think the additional fee is
more than fair, especially since such items are still usually
rather specific to the type of system in question anyway, eg. a
black SGI PS2 keyboard is more valuable than an ordinary PS2
keyboard, so the type of person who'd want one is more likely
to want to check a dedicated category if that was available.

Just a thought! And not a problem if you'd rather not add new
categories until there's a perceived demand. However, it would
be good if eBid is able to think ahead and prevent a clone of
the messy results searches that plague eBay. I have dozens of
SGI items to list, and will be spreading the word to all the other
users of SGIs I know.

Thanks!

Ian.
