Thread: Re changes to auction description width

    So if you had:

    .f_white {
    color: #ffffff;
    width: 99%;
    }

    that would make the width of that table cell 99%. Also, you should never use colours, etc. in the name of your selectors. If you want to change the "f_white" style to red, or blue, it will be very confusing when it's still called "f_white".

    Here's the HTML for one of my standard auctions on Ebay, so you can see how simple it is:

    Now I'm back I've been looking again & your posts, as I said before I know how to use LINKED CSS & I could (apparently at the moment) use it for all my own listings,
    BUT as I've already explained not those I sell because it won't work.

    I've taken screenshots so you can see the problem.

    your feebay listing (pasted from above) used on eBid using the Plain HTML Editor ONLY,

    gives you.

    Yes the CSS has remained linked so does work but as you can see it has messed up the text on the eBid listing page.

    Had to split this into 2 posts it was too long.

    If it is pasted into the Plain HTML view, then edited using the Advanced WYSIWYG editor, which is the way auction templates need to be used by my customers you get.

    All the linking code is stripped out by the WYSIWYG editor.

    So your listing is left as

    This happens with the feebay WYSIWYG editor, & T/Lister as well, in fact switching between the two views more than once on feebay can end up stripping out parts of standard html, sometimes.

    Hence the need to use inline stylesheets for auction templates.

    I agree. When I first looked at the new listings and was scrolling down the page, it looked like that was the end once you got to the first postage section before it went wide.

    I like the wider boxes for the description, but it doesn't seem to flow properly changing to wider and then back again. There is quite a bit of space down the left which is not utilised. I would like to see something here to make the listing a bit more symmetrical - maybe more 'more by this seller' evenly spread over both sides?

    That's mighty bad news, isn't it. Perhaps you could be making a suggestion about this as a new thread in this forum. It's very relevant for the width issue being discussed here, yet it's also a wider issue (ouch, no pun intended?) that needs addressing.

    But a worrying thought crosses my mind -- the WYSIWYG editor may be a 3rd party component that isn't under Gazza and Mark's control.

    Do please consider starting a new thread on this Gothicina. I wonder whether that editor is even the reason Merlin got a spurious /* in his auctions that caused him so much grief.

    I don't understand this HTML and CSS stuff. What I do understand though is my listings now look a mess.

    I spent time over the weekend perfecting (or so I thought a new template to include the new sales venues and listing width. I used the standard eBid template in the defaults with a table and advanced wysiwyg. Tried to post earlier and this is what I got: http://uk.three.ebid.net/perl/auctio...3-1&mo=auction

    As you can see it looks messy. I have as much information in the description as I can put there but there is lots of excess space.

    Also when I listed the terms and conditions, I took quite a lot of time to get the flags centred. Only to find that when I listed it looked nothing like what I had intended. It would help if the template provided in the defaults bore some resemblance to what will actually go on screen.

    I join Merlin in thinking it is the potential sellers (who can't be bothered to do any work on their listings) that have taken precedence; while the rest of us have been ignored.

    It looks that way.
    The width change is a disaster for my listings, especially when I don't happen to have a photo. It looks like a real amateur layout now.

    I think the stripping out of doctype,html.head,link ect by the WYSIWYG are programmed in to protect the site, as I said it happens on feebay as well (& other places).
    It's, probably a necessary, part of the function of an online WYSIWYG editor, given the havoc it "COULD" cause.
    They all do strange things with html at times, but doesn't any WYSIWYG online or not?
    Look at MS frontpage which is noted for adding spurious code, I have yet to find any wysiwyg that produced html that couldn't be tidied up.

    The job of a WYSIWYG is to take what's typed & add the HTML to make it work on most browsers.
    Given that the average user will not know exactly what they want, or how they want it to look until they have tried a few things. Most of the time every revision will add more unused html, the words & layout may be changed to the naked eye but in the background the redundant html remains.

    As for this argument, maybe it would have been better if they could have made it that all new auctions used the new width, but running ones stayed with the old layout, but maybe that was not possible.

    Hi Gothinica, thanks for having a look at my CSS.
    I solved the problem with the <a> selectors taking over the entire page by making them into more specific descendent selectors, as follows:
    I changed
    A:link {
    COLOR: #FFFFFF;
    TEXT-DECORATION: none;
    }

    to

    #wrapper A:link {
    COLOR: #FFFFFF;
    TEXT-DECORATION: none;
    }

    So it only affect anchors that are inside the div with the id of 'wrapper', i.e. it doesn't affect the rest of the Ebid page now.

    But you're quite right - as I just discovered when setting up my Ebid auctions, the two sets of CSS (the one from Ebid, and the one from my auction) do clash, but it's fairly easy to fix the problem, just put all of your auction inside an ID called 'wrapper' (or whatever you fancy) and then if you find that a selector is causing a clash with Ebid's CSS, then you just need to do what I did above, to make it more specific, then it won't override the original Ebid CSS.

    Re using inline styles when producing templates for customers, I still think external style sheets are the way to go. Couldn't you use comments to make it obvious which parts of the HTML the client should edit, like:

    <!-- TITLE START -->
    <h1>

    Nintendo Wii

    </h1>
    <!-- TITLE END -->

    etc. ? They'd be pretty safe as long as they only edited normal text with a space around it.
    If I get time (after uploading 180 odd items today and tomorrow) I'll try to produce a simple template and put it on the message board, so anybody can use it. Then, because it will use an external style sheet, I'll make some background images for the headings, etc. so that people can choose the ones they like the most, without having to edit the auctions again.
    I'll explain in more detail when I upload it all.

    I've experienced this several times over the past week, it's a real pain, another bug in Ebay.

    When I've uploaded my template I think the ability to use an external style sheet with it will show its benefits, I'll get on with it as soon as I can.

Right now you just have to trust you caught any typos on your template or go view it after it is posted and then revise your errors there, which is a big waste of time. I thought maybe it would only be the first revision this would happen on...but it keeps on happening even when I am using a new revised template via "populate" ..... it still keeps displaying the preview in the smaller 600 size instead of the new 900. Or is it only me having this problem?
    I just noticed this as well, Rainbowseeker, it's a bit offputting. I always make my auctions in Webuilder (an HTML editor) before I enter them in Ebid, so I check them then. At least it's really easy to edit auctions once they've started.
