    the best item was a Chinese yellow bowl (we dont deal in china etc) with an est of £100-£200.... 5 phone bidders and 4 in the room hammer price £8,200

    Yes, every now and again the auctioneers seem to get it massively wrong like that.
    About a year ago I witnessed some African tribal stuff estimated at £50-£100 go for £4500.

    Well giving my listings a good talking too and waggling my finger at them obviously didn't work, another three have just gone AWOL ( although I still don't appear on the Hot Sellers list), I will have to bring in the big guns to stop any more escaping.

    That's interesting there is obviously still a stong market in oriental antiques.

    I read an article (think it was in The Times) about a year ago saying that there had been a huge increase in trade in oriental china and porcelain as the Japanese and Chinese had suddenly become very interested in reclaiming some of their exported historical items.

    It's interesting that the recession isn't having a great impact in this market judging by the price that the bowl sold for! Wish I knew more about oriental stuff I will have to get reading!
