GRADING BOOKS. Grading books is extremely difficult, especially where Second-Hand ones are concerned. I try to grade books fairly, but I always tend to 'downgrade' books in descriptions, in order that our Customers are not disappointed. Here follows a 'guide' to certain book conditions and how I describe them. I no longer use the 'official' Book grading terms as used in the trade as these can be too ambiguous.
MINT - Means 'Mint'. Like in a book shop. Please note however that even book shops sell books with a very minor amount of Dust-Jacket wear, (usually from transit). If there is any wear, this will be mentioned on the auction page.
NEAR MINT - Not quite mint essentially. Extremely nice condition, but may have slight shelf-wear to the dust jacket.
VERY GOOD - Still very nice condition, but may have slight dust-jacket wear, or minor indentation. If a paperback, may have spine cracking some degree (where the book has been opened), or very slight wear at the corners of the cover. May have an inscription (If it does, it'll be mentioned on the auction page.)
GOOD - Book has obviously been read in this condition. It will have a 'cracked spine' (from being read), may have slightly more worn corners, small creases to cover, and/or inscription. Paperback pages may be yellowing from age. I usually add something like 'just the usual signs of being read', or 'usual signs of wear and use' etc.
REASONABLE - Cover will be creased, or corners split. Spine will have very evident signs of being read. However although the book will still be readable, it certainly won't be for the Collector unless a particularly rare item!
Sometimes, books fall into a combination of two of the above categories. Any thing of significance (good or bad) will be mentioned on the auction page, including the dust-cover, First Editions, Numberline etc. I'll occasionally say that a book has 'indentations', which means that the book has been placed on something at sometime, and moved across it, which can cause minor 'indentations' to the cover.
Other Terms
'Oversized' refers to a paperback somewhat larger than usual, for instance a 'Trade' Edition.
'Large-Format' refers to a large edition, popularly referred to as a 'Coffee-table book'.
