Comments: The Griffith Observer is a publication by the iconic Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles that features in many Hollywood movies and TV series. The observatory is not just about appearing in the media but has some sizeable telescopes there that can be used for research and some great education and museum  facilities too. In this edition of the Griffith Observe you can learn a lot about Cristopher Columbus and astronomy. There are 3 pages of awards by the Astronomy Society of the Pacific with pictures of astronomers: Fred Whipple, John Hill, Melvin Dyck, Benjamin Zuckerman, Jean Meeus,  and the writer Timothy Ferris. There are some brief book reviews before the journal launches into a couple of images of Halley’s comet and the solar eclipse seen by the Greeks in (probably) 648 BC – as documented by Archilochus. There is a what’s on in the sky and star charts (night and pre-dawn sky) for April 1987. Finally, a gravitational lens arc photo for the Abell 370 cluster of galaxies is shown on the inside back cover and back cover.
