Seller's Description

On DVD or VHS:

From its miraculous 28-day construction in 1933 to its somber closing in 1992, Longacres Race Track thrilled the Northwest with the speed and thunder of Thoroughbred racing. Longacres had weathered the "Great Depression", disastrous floods and World War II; it withstood the onslaught of moral assaults and market competition, but the forces of change were irresistible and in 1992 it all came to a sad ending...the young city had outgrown the track. This is the story of Longacres' founder, Joe Gottstein and the track he built.

Local newspapers called him, "one of the most influential men in Seattle's modern history." Gottstein made a fortune in real estate but gambled it all on his passion for horse racing. With an iron fist and a soft heart, Gottstein brought professional racing back to the Northwest over the course of 60 years and his gamble created a giant industry.

Tucked away in the Northwest corner of America and considering its size and distance from the national circuit, Longacres should have gone unnoticed but throughout its history, "The Miracle Strip" produced world records, champion Thoroughbreds and launched the careers of some of the greatest jockeys and horsemen the, "Sport of Kings", has ever seen; legends such as CHARLIE WHITTINGHAM, JOHNNY LONGDEN, GARY STEVENS and RUSSELL BAZE.

With rare photographs, recordings and film footage, this feature-length documentary captures nearly 60 years of images, memories and stories of a Northwest institution. This 1993 National Eclipse Award winning documentary speaks volumes about Longacres and is sure to enthrall viewers.
