In an era when contact with mainland China was next to nothing Carlo Lizzani became the first Western director allowed to film a documentary in the People’s Republic of China with shots of the Great Wall itself, the rolling green hills beyond it, fishing cormorants, a tiger hunt, a ritualistic marriage, harbors, temples, flower gardens and cityscapes.
