THE CAÑONS OF THE COLORADO--the 1869 discovery voyage down the Colorado River. by Major John Wesley Powell.
Note the word CAÑONS in the title; the little wiggly line above the N, a tilde, gives the word the pronunciation as though it was canyons, which of course describes the lands through which this great western river flows. From Green River Wyoming, into Colorado, through Utah, to Arizona and its Grand Canyon, and on to Nevada--this was the journey of the "Colorado River Exploring Expediton", what Powell called his group of 9 men and 4 boats as they began charting what was the last major unexplored part of the then United States. Illustrations are by Thomas Moran and others, mainly engravings typical of books and reports of that period.
This is truly an adventure story of exploration. There were no maps; they would be making initial ones. They survived a boat fire, overturns, climbing on cliff walls, searching for drinking water, running massive unknown rapids, meeting Indians and discovering ancient Indian ruins, losing 2 of their crew never to be found, and running very low on food. Parts of Powell's trip can be made today, but with maps and river guidebooks and even via rafting companies with intimate knowledge of the river's moods and flows and currents.64 pages.
This is not a modern study by a current author, but the report Powell himself wrote, reprinted from an early national magazine. Powell also authored other books about the American West and became Director of the United States Geological Survey. His insights predicted the Dust Bowl disaster in the Southwest of the 1930s but the preemptive plan he proposed to avoid it was not implemented.
