Seller's Description

This is a black & white photo (200m x 155mm) showing a Vichy French FT-17 tank that was knocked out by US forces near Safi, Morocco, during the fighting in November 1942 following the Allied landings in North Africa. Another similar vehicle can be seen beyond.  The caption explains :

Before action was halted in French Northwest Africa, the Americans and their Allies has swapped a few punches with the French defenders.  A victim of that short war was this French light tank - which looks like a relic of WW1. Shot out of control, it left the road along which it was rolling up against the Allies, plunged across the sidewalk, and ended thus against a garden wall.   A helmeted American stands guards, while a native examines the wreckage.  The tank was ‘ko-ed’ 18 miles south of Safi in French Morocco.   The photograph was radioed today, November 20th, from London to New York”.

I see online an account of this action which states :

"On November 8th, the 47th Infantry Regiment, then called the 47th Regimental Combat Team, landed at Safi. As the soldiers made their way into town they neared the area just south of the harbor where several army barracks were the main center of resistance. Company K and I were ordered to attack but were quickly pinned down by machine gun and rifle fire.

Vichy French defenders counter-attacked them with three French FT-17 light tanks. Two of these were quickly knocked out with rifle grenades. The driver of the third tank [presumably the one  in the photo] was stunned by the explosions and action around him and drove his tank into a wall."

The photo is in fair condition with some wear and newspaper marks.
