In 1958 he held the position of secretary at the Colombian embassy in Sweden. His fame was such that he was invited to the Soviet Union and China. In 1966, he was a member of the jury for the Casa de las Am?ricas competition in Cuba. In 1970, his outstanding literary works were awarded the National Poetry Prize. After that, he received other official awards, such as the Cruz de Boyaca and the Order of San Carlos. A poetry prize bearing his name was established in Caracas.
