Postcard WW1 Sketches of Tommy's Life British Army Out on Rest 6 soldier shaving

This is a postcard from the “Sketches of Tommy's Life” series, drawn by Fergus Mackain, and based on his own experience while serving with the British Army on the Western Front during WW1.   The cards were illustrated with delicately coloured sketches showing soldiers in various situations, sometimes humorous, and sometimes not.  Many of these situations will be familiar to anyone who has served in any army since !

This example is No.6 in the 10 card set entitled “Out on Rest”, and shows a soldier shaving with a mirror attached to a tree.  It was published by G. Savigny in Paris, on quite thin paper, and is unposted.  There is a message on the back saying, “this is another of my experiences, shirt off in warm weather too, would you believe it, Jim” - this is one way these cards were often used by soldiers, to illustrate their own experiences to family and friends back home. 

Note also that the soldier shaving has badges attached to his waistbelt - it became common for soldiers to collect badges and shoulder titles, as a way commemorating all those other units with which they had contact.

The card is in fair condition with minor wear to the corners and edges, and a few marks.
