Seller's Description

Original circa 1914 12 1/8 inch x 9 1/2 inch Etching titled EVENING IN FINISTERRE

This scene depicts peasants enjoying a moment of leisure at the end of the day. The village of Finistère is located in Brittany on the northwestern coast of France, and these figures wear the province’s traditional headdresses.

Signed and dated (1882) in the plate.

Etched by Émile Frédéric Salmon (1840 - 1913). Emile Frédéric Salmon was a sculptor and print-maker. He was the son of the painter Théodore Frédéric Salmon and the father of the poet and art critic André Salmon.

After Jules Breton (1827 - 1906). Jules Adolphe Aimé Louis Breton was a 19th-century French Realist painter. His paintings are heavily influenced by the French countryside and his absorption of traditional methods of painting helped make Jules Breton one of the primary transmitters of the beauty and idyllic vision of rural existence.

From “Modern Etching and Engraving: With Examples by Leading Artists” by Basil Hansard published as part works by Virtue & Co., 7 City Garden Row, City Road, London circa 1914

Image size 9 3/4 inch x 6 7/8 inch

The etching, on thick wove paper, is in very good condition. Reverse side blank.
