Some Information About VintagePaper

Giving you a little more insight into the seller.

Hello from North Pole, Alaska.

Finding and sharing old photo’s, postcards, books and magazines, advertising, jewelry and other Antiquarian ephemera that show the classic beauty of a lost time is my life’s passion. My husband was the first to interest me in this period when he came home one day many years ago proudly showing me his new possession of an 1800’s fashion magazine called Peterson’s Magazine, formally Frank Leslie’s Gazette of Fashion.

At first it was only a part time business. We would buy, sell and trade with our friends and family here locally as we raised our four children on our own American dream of homesteading a few acres just outside of North Pole, Alaska. As our children grew older we became more and more drawn to collecting and preserving a time gone by and began to expand our interests in to the 20th century as well. Again, it was my husband who realized that all those Mother Earth News he had used, saved and collected over the years, might be valuable to the, at that time new, survivalist movement.

But, those in the know say that not all issues of T.M.E.N. are collectible. For those who were around in the early 70’s and know the history of the magazine they know it was started by husband and wife, John and Jane Shuttleworth. Both of the Shuttleworth’s were very committed to exploring alternative forms and methods of energy and environmental ideas. As the magazine became more known it became more successful and helped inspire an entire generation of back to the landers. It’s success though also became it’s downfall as far as collect-ability is concerned.  The Shuttleworths were so successful with the magazine that it drew the attention of a New York publishing company. By then the Shuttleworths had been at it for 10 years, were burned out and sold it to the New York company. Unfortunately, it’s never been the same magazine since then as it looks like, from the pages, advertising takes precedence over environmental issues. So, the first 100 issues have become the most collectible over the years. Especially, now that John Shuttleworth has passed away. Dave Duffy’s article “Looking back on 20 years of BHM (Backwoods Home Magazine)” Here is, in my opinion, the best eulogy of Mr. Shuttleworth.

As the years went by and our children became older we eventually started to buy and sell on national online venues. And now, we have taken the next step and have become members of eBid.. Unfortunately, as the years went by my husbands health deteriorated until he was no longer able to work. So now I run the business, take care of him and live for today, while looking toward a bright future.
