MTOTO's early career was dogged by problems with his feet, so much so that by the end of his three-year old career he had won only a maiden race at Haydock, though he had run creditably in the Queen Elizabeth II and King Edward VII Stakes at Ascot. Signs that there were much better things to come emerged when he won the Brigadier Gerard Stakes at Sandown on his first appearance as a four-year-old and this was followed by victory in the Prince of Wales Stakes and his first Group 1 success when he beat that year's Epsom Derby, King George and St. Leger winner REFERENCE POINT in the Eclipse.

Even better was to follow in his final year, 1988. This began with victory over BROKEN HEARTED in the Prince of Wales Stakes and was followed by a second successive victory in the Eclipse, with SHADY HEIGHTS his nearest rival. He then put up the best show of his career by taking the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth from UNFUWAIN and TONY BIN, and came within a whisker of ending his racing career in a blaze of glory when he was just nipped by TONY BIN in the
Prix de L'Arc de Triomphe.
