The first prosaic book by a Russian writer and playwright, a classic of Soviet drama, famous for the heroically revolutionary drama Love Yarovaya (1926), by Konstantin Andreevich Trenev (1876 1945). The second separate book by the author (the first play Dorogina, 1912). A collection of stories describing village life, the life and mores of provincial officials, clergy, and teachers elicited widespread criticism, both positive and negative, and numerous responses from colleagues in the shop: Gorky, Bunin correspondence, Eichenwald, Lazarevsky, Izmaylov, and others.
