Colwyn Bay (Welsh: Bae Colwyn) is a town, community and seaside resort in Conwy County Borough on the north coast of Wales overlooking the Irish Sea. Eight neighbouring communities are incorporated within its postal district. Established as its own separate parish in 1844 with just a small grouping of homes and farms where the community of Old Colwyn stands today, Colwyn Bay has expanded to become the second-largest community and business centre in the north of Wales as well as the 16th largest in the whole of Wales with the urban statistical area having a population of 28,992 at the 2001 census.
The western side of Colwyn Bay, Rhos-on-Sea, includes a number of historic sites associated with St Trillo and Ednyfed Fychan, the 13th century general and councillor to Llywelyn the Great.
Bay of Colwyn Town Council is a statutory body, covering the communities in the urban area. The mayor for 2013-14 is Chris Perry.
The town is situated about halfway along the north coast of Wales, between the sea and the Pwllycrochan Woods on the towering hillside. Groes yn Eirias (Welsh:Cross in Torch) was once a separate hamlet centred on the Glyn farmhouse (c1640) but the area is now occupied by the Glyn estate and Eirias Park.
The Victoria Pier has been closed to the public since 2009 when a dispute between Conwy County Borough Council and the pier's owner lead to him being declared bankrupt. Llety'r Dryw is a Grade II listed house in Abergele Road, built for the uncle of Anthony Eden and now used as the training centre for North Wales Police. Llys Euryn is a medieval manor house on Bryn Euryn, now in ruins.
Tref arfordirol a chymuned ym mwrdeistref sirol Conwy yw Bae Colwyn. Mae priffordd yr A55 yn pasio drwy'r dref ac mae ganddi orsaf ar Reilffordd Arfordir Gogledd Cymru. Mae'n dref wyliau gyda phromenâd braf, pier a pharciau. Mae'r traeth yn llydan a diogel gyda thywod braf a rhimyn o gerrig mân. Mae'n dal i fod yn ganolfan siopa brysur er gwaethaf y gystadleuaeth o du'r archfarchnadau mawr. Lleolir pencadlys Heddlu Gogledd Cymru ym Mharc Eirias. Ceir yn ogystal nifer o swyddfeydd llywodraeth leol a'r gwasanaeth sifil yn y dref, gan gynnwys rhai o swyddfeydd rhanbarthol Cynulliad Cenedlaethol Cymru.
Cyn ad-drefnu llywodraeth leol yng Nghymru yn Ebrill 1974 roedd Bae Colwyn yn Fwrdeisdref Ddinesig yn yr hen Sir Ddinbych gyda phoblogaeth o tua 25,000, ond yn 1974 ddiddymwyd yr hen awdurdod i adael pum cymuned (seiledig ar y plwyfi). Mae gan Bae Colwyn yn ôl y diffiniad hwnnw boblogaeth o 9,742 (2001). Poblogaeth y cymunedau eraill a fu'n rhan o'r hen fwrdeisdref yw Mochdre (1,862), Llandrillo-yn-Rhos (7,110), Hen Golwyn (7,626) a Llysfaen (2,652). Erbyn heddiw mae'r pum plwyf yn un ardal drefol mewn gwirionedd, gyda phoblogaeth o 30,265 o bobl (2001), yr uchaf yng ngogledd Cymru ac eithrio Wrecsam.
Cnewyllyn y dref oedd Hen Golwyn ('Colwyn' yn wreiddiol) a Llysfaen i'r dwyrain a Llandrillo-yn-Rhos i'r gorllewin; tyfodd y dref rhwng y ddau le hynny (sy'n rhan o Fae Colwyn o safbwynt llywodraeth leol). Fel yn achos Llandudno a'r Rhyl, tyfodd Bae Colwyn yn gyflym yn ail hanner y 19eg ganrif, yn sgîl dyfodiad y rheilffordd yn 1848, a dechrau'r 20fed ganrif fel tref gwyliau glan môr hawdd i'w chyrraedd o drefi poblog gogledd-orllewin Lloegr.
Roedd y dref yn sir Clwyd hyd 1996, a bu'n rhan o'r Sir Ddinbych hanesyddol hyd 1974.
Mae'r dref wedi dioddef problemau cymdeithasol ers y 1980au gyda nifer o bobl ddiwaith o ogledd Lloegr symud i mewn a'r canran hyn o'r boblogaeth gynyddu ar yr un pryd wrth i bobl symud yno ar ôl ymddeol.
Lleolir Theatr Colwyn yn y dref. Dyma'r sinema hynaf yng ngwledydd Prydain sy'n dal i weithredu.
Ar gyrion y Bae ceir Parc Eirias, gyda Phwll Nofio a meysydd chwarae.
