INTRODUCTION
The wonderful clothes, gifts, and accessories we’ve gathered in this book are fashioned by using up-to-date methods for doing time-honored lap crafts, such as smocking, hand-quilting, hemming, and crocheting, and finding new ways to use them. Everything’s easy to carry, and each finished product has the added luxurious feel and look that only hand work can impart. We’ve even pared down the directions for each item so that they’re easy to follow on-the-go; while “How To” sections in the back of the book give complete step-by-step instructions for every craft.
Smocking is a beautiful, traditional way to decorate clothes and household accessories, and it’s surprisingly easy when you follow our instructions. Usually, the sections of material to be smocked must be prepared ahead of time, but we used fabric with a repeat pattern for several things — the Gingham Sun Hat, Polka Dot Blouse, and Mock Turtle-Neck Dress, eliminating the need for pre-marking.
Hand-quilting is another technique in this book. You’ll find that it has a completely different look and feel than quilting done by machine — it’s much softer and lighter. All of the quilted projects we’ve included are made from pieces small enough to carry with ease.
Many of the crocheted items in the book, such as the designer Afghan, Laced-Front Vest, and Warm Ankle Boots, are worked in small portable sections which are then joined. The crocheted Placemats and Christmas Socks, however, are made all in one easy piece. Most of the crochet patterns used are made up of repetitive motifs, eliminating the need to follow lengthy directions away from home.
Finally, you’ll find many exciting small things, under the heading of Hems and Finishes, which make marvelous boutique and bazaar items, or gifts for yourself or a friend. Among them are beautiful expensive looking rolled hems, fringed edges, contrast borders, and mitered corners — all completely hand-worked in a jiffy to add a custom look to scarves, shawls, towels, and table linens.
