Views of Nikolo-Ugreshsky Monastery. In Russian (ask us if in doubt)/Vidy Nikolo-Ugreshskogo monastyrya. According to legend, the monastery was founded by Prince Dmitry Donskoy in memory of the appearance to him of an icon of St. Nicholas in 1380, before the Battle of Kulikov. Tradition says that an icon of Nikolai the Wonderworker appeared to the prince on this site over a high green pine at a time when Donskoy led his troops against the approaching enemy of Russia, Mamai. Delighted by this phenomenon, Dimitri exclaimed: This is my whole heart. That is why since then the place where the apparition took place is called Ugresa.
