Alexander Nikolaevich Serov (1820-1871) is a Russian composer and music critic, chairman of the committee of the Russian Music Society, father of the painter Valentin Alexandrovich Serov. His name has become one of the brightest music critics of his time. In 1856 alone, he wrote more than sixty musicological works, including The Music of Southern Russian Songs (accompanied by his own harmonies of six Ukrainian folk songs), one of the first scientific studies in Russian musicology on folk creativity.
