Seller's Description

Rare Maynard Workshop Postcard of the New Old South Tower Copley Square Boston Massachusetts

"THE CITY" POST CARDS is on a title block in the middle of blank back.  There is a divided rule in the middle - one side for your message, another for the recipient's address.  On the bottom is the tagline "FROM PHOTOGRAMS COPYRIGHTED BY THE MAYNARD WORKSHOP - WABAN - MASSACHUSETTS"

The bottom left of the image has a very light c circled (the copyright symbol), beneath that is what appears to be "F and K" with a wavy line underneath with a small mark or dot under that.

The card is unused, unstamped, undated.

If you are a collector of Maynard Workshop cards, you know that they are hard to date.  This card is circa 1920's or early 1930's.

The image is of the Old New South Church.  The original church was built in 1670, the second "version" in 1720, and the version in this postcard in built in 1873, which explains the "new."  The church is located at 645 Boylston Street, in Boston's Copley Square neighborhood (in the area where the Boston Marathon bombings took place.)  The church is on the National Historic Register and is known for its distinctive ornate Italian Gothic Revival Style and its tower, the subject of this postcard.

The 246 foot tower, or campanile, began to list in the 1920's (like the Leaning Tower of Pisa.)  It, and the neighborhood known as the ""Back Bay"" was built on reclaimed land.  The campanile was deemed to present safety risk and was ""de-constructed"" starting in December 1931 with the demolition completed in February 1932.  The original stones were numbered and saved and the tower was rebuilt on a more substantial foundation in 1936.

We think this postcard shows the original campanile, which should date this card to the 1920's.  The church is to the right of the tower and the Boston Public Library is on the left side of the post card.  There is an MTA trolley (the then Massachusetts Transit Authority, and probably the Arborway Line) on the ride side of the post card in front of the church.  Trollies no longer service the Copley Square area.

There is some light creasing in the left margin and at right top and bottom corner.  The black and white image is not sharp like you might expect from a contemporary postcard.

This is an unused antique postcard.

QUESTIONS?

Please ask any questions prior to your purchase.

We do not accept Offers.  We do not respond to offers made.  The price is what it is.  We’d love it if you would pay more, because we need a bookmobile, but we won’t take less.

IS THERE SOMETHING YOU WANT TO TELL US?

Have we misspelled something?  Please let us know.  Is a photograph missing?  Please let us know.  Do you have information you think we should add to our listing?  Do you want to share some information about a relative who signed a book we have on offer or a recipe we highlighted or a historical note?  We appreciate your interest and we’d love to hear from you.

CONTACTING YOU AFTER YOUR PURCHASE:

Occasionally, we have questions after your purchase.  Sometimes we need to confirm a shipping address.  If we have questions, we will contact you through ebid’s messaging system. Please check your ebid Messages and your email or shipment of your item may be delayed.  It is possible that your purchase may be cancelled if we don’t hear back from you.

BUYERS LOCATED OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES - PLEASE NOTE:

Receipt of your item may be delayed if it has to go through custom inspection in your country.  Occasionally, this adds days or weeks to delivery.

Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility.

Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to buying.

Customs fees are normally charged by the shipping company or collected when you pick the item up. These fees are not additional shipping charges.

We won't under-value merchandise or mark the item as a gift on customs forms. Doing that is against U.S. and international laws.

During peak shipping times, it may take weeks to have your item clear customs.  We’ve had some items arrive in Europe in a week, but a package to South America once took six weeks to arrive!  Again, you’ll have to check with the customs office in your country if your item hasn’t been received.

Restrictions in your country may not allow us to ship certain items.

Many countries do not allow shipments of coins or precious metals, for example.  Some media, including computer software, music CDs or DVDs may be restricted for sale outside the United States.

VHS and DVDs are formatted differently for different countries.

If you are purchasing a VHS videotape, please note the format your machine requires before you make your purchase.  Most of our tapes are NTSC format (it is specified in the listing what the format is) which will not work in most video players in Europe and Australia.  We routinely contact anyone overseas who purchases a VHS video to ask them to check if their machine can play an NTSC tape before we ship.

Many DVDs also have a specific format by country.  If you are purchasing a DVD, please make sure the DVD is a format that will play in your machine.

NO RETURN, NO CANCELLATION POLICY:

We no longer accept returns or cancellations due a history of fraudulent claims.

OUR TEXT, IMAGES AND OUR COPYRIGHT:

Our photographs and text, including titles and subtitles, are copyrighted and may not be used, copied or redistributed.  Quotes are for illustrative purposes only and remain the property of their respective copyright holders.

Civil and criminal penalties apply to the theft of copyrighted material.

If you see our photographs or text elsewhere on eBid or online, please let us know.

We’ve found our “stolen” photographs and text on other e-commerce websites many times.  In order to help reduce fraud and image theft, you’ll notice that most of our photographs have our logo or other label appearing on each image which obscures a small part of the item.

It is possible that anyone who uses stolen images or text may not even have the item they are trying to sell and that their intention is to defraud you.  We don’t want anyone to use our images or text to try and sell you something they don’t have.

Please be savvy and safe while shopping online.  Your local public library should be able to help you find great resources to protect yourself and your family while shopping online.

Thank you for reading this.  You are the kind of educated consumer with whom we want to do business and whom we aim very hard to please.

We appreciate your looking at our listing! Your purchase supports libraries, literacy and lifelong learning.
