Seller's Description

Lot of six (6) Paul Theroux Hardcovers including five (5) First Editions

1.  Deep South

8vo size hardcover with dust jacket; 441 pages followed by a section of color photographs by Steve McCurry on glossy stock

From back:  "(The author) explores a piece of America - the Deep South.  He finds there a paradoxical place, full of incomparable music, unparalleled cuisine, and yet also some of the nation's worst schools, housing, and unemployment rates.  It's these parts of the South, so often ignored, that have caught Theroux's keen traveler's eye...

Theroux visits gun shows and small town churches, laborers in Arkansas, and parts of Mississippi where the still call the farm up the road, 'the plantation'."

Light wear to jacket, small bump to top of front cover, front board appears slightly warped.

2.  Half Moon Street

First Edition with full numberline

8vo size hardcover with dust jacket; 219 pages

From jacket:  "(The author) brings us two brilliant short novels on the thee of a double life...both are full of a kind of eerie menace  that lies just beneath the outward events.

Lauren Slaughter's life began to change beyond recognition...

Gerald DeMarr's life suddenly changes one July day when his missing twin brother George turns up on the doorstep of their Massachusetts family home and demands to stay."

Jacket has edgewear and a small abrasion on back.

3.  Kowloon Tong

First Edition with full numberline

8vo size hardcover with dust jacket; 243 deckle edged pages

From jacket:  "When Bunt first meets Mr. Hung, a well-spoken gentleman from the Chinese mainland, he pays him little heed.  And when Mr. Hung offers the Mullards a handsome sum for their family business...Bunt refuses him out of hand.  yet it soon grows clean that Mr. Hung is different from the Chinese the Mullards have lived alongside for years.  For Mr. Hung will accept no refusals."

Jacket has light wear and edgewear.

4.  Sailing through China

Stated First American Edition with full numberline

12mo size hardcover with dust jacket; 64 pages with black and white illustrations by Patrick Procktor

From jacket:  "Paul Theroux sailed down the Yangtze with a party of American millionaires...both the idiosyncrasies of the company and the impressions of China itself provided rich material for the kind of perceptive, witty writing at which the author excels."

Jacket has light wear and is price clipped; owners info written on fep; bumped head and heel of spine.

5.  The Lower River

First Edition with full numberline

8vo sized hardcover with dust jacket; 323 bright, white pages.

From jacket:  "Ellis Hock never believed that he would return to Africa.  He runs an old-fashioned menswear store in a small town in Massachusetts but still dreams of his Eden, the four years he spent in Malawi with the Peace Corps, cut short when he had to return to take over the family business.  When his wife leaves him, and he is on his own, he realizes that there is one place for him to go:  back to his village in Malawi, on the remote Lower River, where he can be happy again.

Arriving at the dusty village, he finds it transformed:  the school he built is a ruin, the church and clinic are gone, and poverty and apathy have set in among the people."

Edgewear to jacket, tiny crease on back jacket flap; we noted paper clip impressions on the bottom of the page.

6.  The Stranger at the Palazzo d'Oro and Other Stories

8vo size hardcover with dust jacket; 296 deckle edged pages.

First Edition with full numberline.

From jacket:  "The thrill and risk of pursuit and desire mark the accompanying stories of the sexual awakening and rites of passages of a Boston boyhood, the ruin of a writer in Africa, and the bewitchment of a retiree in Hawaii. This is Paul Theroux at his most allusive and wise, writing with a deep understanding of the frailties of men and boys."

Edgewear, bumped head of spine.

QUESTIONS?

Please ask any questions prior to your purchase.

We do not accept Offers.  We do not respond to offers made.  The price is what it is.  We’d love it if you would pay more, because we need a bookmobile, but we won’t take less.

IS THERE SOMETHING YOU WANT TO TELL US?

Have we misspelled something?  Please let us know.  Is a photograph missing?  Please let us know.  Do you have information you think we should add to our listing?  Do you want to share some information about a relative who signed a book we have on offer or a recipe we highlighted or a historical note?  We appreciate your interest and we’d love to hear from you.

SHIPPING AND HANDLING:

Every item has calculated shipping. Please choose your preferred method.

Shipping includes USPS tracking where available.

All shipments are subject to US Postal Service regulations.

When we ship the item, you will receive a message with shipping information and USPS Tracking Number (where applicable.)

Please visit www.usps.com to check the tracking of your package for shipments within the United States.  End to end tracking is not available for most shipments outside the United States.

GIFTS:

Please let us know if you’re sending a gift, because we will be including a receipt with the price of the item.  You may not want us to include the receipt.  We’re happy to include our gift card (at no cost) or your note or message (also at no cost.)  We will not send anonymous gifts.

Payment must be made in US funds and by PayPal.

CONTACTING YOU AFTER YOUR PURCHASE:

Occasionally, we have questions after your purchase.  Sometimes we need to confirm a shipping address.  If we have questions, we will contact you through eBid’s messaging system. Please check your eBid Messages and your email or shipment of your item may be delayed.  It is possible that your purchase may be cancelled if we don’t hear back from you.

BUYERS LOCATED OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES - PLEASE NOTE:

Receipt of your item may be delayed if it has to go through custom inspection in your country.  Occasionally, this adds days or weeks to delivery.

Import duties, taxes, and charges are not included in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility.

Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to buying.

Customs fees are normally charged by the shipping company or collected when you pick the item up. These fees are not additional shipping charges.

We won't under-value merchandise or mark the item as a gift on customs forms. Doing that is against U.S. and international laws.

During peak shipping times, it may take weeks to have your item clear customs.  We’ve had some items arrive in Europe in a week, but a package to South America once took six weeks to arrive!  Again, you’ll have to check with the customs office in your country if your item hasn’t been received.

Restrictions in your country may not allow us to ship certain items.

Many countries do not allow shipments of coins or precious metals, for example.  Some media, including computer software, music CDs or DVDs may be restricted for sale outside the United States.

VHS and DVDs are formatted differently for different countries.

If you are purchasing a VHS videotape, please note the format your machine requires before you make your purchase.  Most of our tapes are NTSC format (it is specified in the listing what the format is) which will not work in most video players in Europe and Australia.  We routinely contact anyone overseas who purchases a VHS video to ask them to check if their machine can play an NTSC tape before we ship.

Many DVDs also have a specific format by country.  If you are purchasing a DVD, please make sure the DVD is a format that will play in your machine.

NO RETURN, NO CANCELLATION POLICY:

We no longer accept returns or cancellations due a history of fraudulent claims.

OUR TEXT, IMAGES AND OUR COPYRIGHT:

Our photographs and text, including titles and subtitles, are copyrighted and may not be used, copied or redistributed.  Quotes are for illustrative purposes only and remain the property of their respective copyright holders.

Civil and criminal penalties apply to the theft of copyrighted material.

If you see our photographs or text elsewhere on eBid or online, please let us know.

We’ve found our “stolen” photographs and text on other e-commerce websites many times.  In order to help reduce fraud and image theft, you’ll notice that most of our photographs have our logo or other label appearing on each image which obscures a small part of the item.

It is possible that anyone who uses stolen images or text may not even have the item they are trying to sell and that their intention is to defraud you.  We don’t want anyone to use our images or text to try and sell you something they don’t have.

Please be savvy and safe while shopping online.  Your local public library should be able to help you find great resources to protect yourself and your family while shopping online.

Thank you for reading this.  You are the kind of educated consumer with whom we want to do business and whom we aim very hard to please.
