W noc sylwestrową, kiedy cały świat się bawi, w suterenie na obrzeżach wielkiego miasta toczy się dialog dwóch osób - emigranta politycznego i zarobkowego gastarbeitera. Wszystko ich dzieli: pochodzenie, obyczaje, poglądy. Ich oczekiwania wobec Zachodu też są odmienne: inteligent szuka wolności duchowej, proletariusz - materialnej. Obaj przeżywają dramat monotonnej i beznadziejnej egzystencji. Żyją złudzeniami i są tak samo bezradni.
