Seller's Description

This is a Richard Strange photo and Mostly Postcards printing, card #3015. This glossy mint condition view informs us of:

"GOLD! The discovery of old" (they mean gold) "and subsequent 'Gold Rush' to California in 1848 changed the history of Yuma forever. Initially, local Indians would ferry prospectors and their goods across the river in boats made of baskets. In 1849, a ferry was run by a scoundrel named John Gallantin renowned for scalping the Indians and dark skinned immigrants for bounty. A legal ferry and military encampment were finally established in July of 1850 for this very important transportation link to the gold fields of California."
