"Cotton Fingers" George Moore and "The Professor" Roy Higgins were the idols of Australian race goers for thirty years. They were up there with the greatest jockeys the world has ever known.
Speaking with Australia's most popular racing media personality, John Tapp, George and Roy lift the lid on their own fabulous careers and offer fascinating insights into the way racing was in the great days from the late 40's to the 70's.
George Moore (born in 1923), champion jockey, was born in Mackay, Queensland and was apprenticed in Brisbane in 1938. Moving to Sydney, he began his long and sometimes tempestuous relationship with trainer "T" Tommy Smith - a partnership that was more successful than any other. Nicknamed "Cotton Fingers" for his ability to control and get the best out of a horse, Moore won a record 10 Sydney Premierships in his career of 2278 wins in Australia and overseas - although he never won the Melbourne Cup. In England, he won the English Derby, King George and Queen Elizabeth stakes, the 2000 Guineas twice, the 1000 Guineas, the Coronation and Ascot Gold Cups and the Gimcrack and Champagne Stakes. He won the Arc De Triomphe and the Derby in France, and the San Diego Stakes in the US. Widely regarded as Australia’s greatest jockey, his name will always be linked in racing circles with the legendary horse TULLOCH. He retired from racing in 1971, when he won his final race on CLASSIC MISSION in the Victoria Derby. He became Hong Kong’s leading trainer before moving to the Gold Coast. The George Moore Medal is awarded annually to Sydney’s outstanding jockey.
Roy Higgins is regarded as one of Australia’s most successful and best-loved jockeys and his talent and connection with horses earned him the name ""The Professor"". His riding career spanned from 1953 to 1984 and during that time, despite a constant battle with his weight, he managed to win most of Australia’s premier races, some of them on several occasions. Higgins' name is associated with some of the most successful trainers and horses in history. He worked with T. J. Smith and Bart Cummings, two men who would gratefully acknowledge the contribution Higgins made to their reputations. His two greatest wins were in the Melbourne Cup with LIGHT FINGERS (1965) and RED HANDED (1967). These wins were not only the first Cup wins for Roy but were the first of 12 (and still counting) Cup wins for trainer Bart Cummings. Roy nearly won a third Melbourne Cup, beaten in a photo finish on SALAMANDER by HYPERNO in 1979. Roy’s partnership with Bart Cummings was a fascinating one and they proved to be an unstoppable and dominating duo during the 1960's and 1970's with countless wins; many of Roy’s 2300 race wins were on horses trained by Bart Cummings. Some of the more famous horses he was associated with include the great grey GUNSYND, LEILANI, STORM QUEEN and BIG PHILOU. Roy added to his winning tally overseas, riding in South Africa, France, Hong Kong and Belgium. Each year, Victoria’s most successful jockey is the winner of the Jockeys’ Premiership. Roy Higgins has received this award on 11 occasions, a record that he shares with an earlier jockey, Bill Duncan. Higgins retired from riding in 1984 declaring his ambition was “to be a little fat man”. Roy has continued to be an active member of the Victorian racing scene including television and radio racing commentary, participating in the annual Melbourne Cup tour, lecturing in the jockey training program at the Northern Lodge Training Centre of Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE and is also involved in the management of horses - he serves as an advisor and selector of broodmares and as a consultant at the North Melbourne Institute of Technical and Further Education where he instructs in the areas of horse breeding. In 1983, Roy Higgins was inducted into the Australian Sporting Hall of Fame and in 2001 into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame.
