When the Jockey Club decided to take action against incorrect and excessive use of the whip and introduced guidelines to be used during the running of a race in the early 1990's, the response from jockeys was positive and there's no doubt that the standard of riding had improved. The Jockey Club commissioned this film to show that excessive use of the whip is counter-productive. The message is simple; if you use the whip thoughtfully and for a purpose, you certainly won't ride any less winners and the probability is that you'll ride more.

Each jockey has a responsibility to the owner and trainer to get the best out of his mount but top jockeys and trainers agree that hitting a horse as hard and as often as you can is not the answer. Successful riders and conditioners such as Willie Carson, Steve Cauthen, Luca Cumani, Frankie Dettori and John Dunlop demonstrate sensible riding techniques that produce greater results than excessive whip use. Introduction by John Francome.
