Seller's Description

The Ladybird Book : The Story of Cricket

  • Copyright date for the first edition: 1964 but it was probably purchased about 1970
  • Size: 17.8cm tall x 11.7cm wide x 6mm thick
  • Weight: 58g
  • Lady Bird Series No.: 606C (Games)
  • Author: Vera Southgate M.A., B.Com.
  • Original price: 2’6
  • ISBN: 7214 0075 2
  • Hardback
  • 51 numbered Pages
  • Condition: Used but cover is very good – though some minor scrapes on its spine corners and the bottom edge where white is showing through – simply through from being on a shelf. But compare this to the appearance of other similar Ladybird books (on-line) before buying and you will see that this is in very good shape for its age. The inside is in really great condition with no marks, creases or any other damage. Examine images very carefully to see what you will be getting and compare these to any images you may find of this book elsewhere.
  • General Comments: I wonder how many famous cricketers and sports people were influenced by this book whilst children? It was written by Vera Southgate, a prolific children’s author. The pictures were by Jack Matthew. This book covers the history of Cricket, at least up until 1968 when Yorkshire won the County Championship according to the inside of the front cover. P46 has a section on Women’s cricket – which is quite a good forward-looking concept to get across to children in the late 1960’s. The font used inside is large, so its an easy reading book for younger readers - maybe a useful ploy . to get readres hooked on the sport whilst young. This would be an appropriate book for Ladybird Book collectors, cricket lovers, as a present for a child who wants to learn about cricket, or maybe a retirement present for an amateur/professional cricketer?
