Text from the free encyclopedia WIKIPEDIA may appear below to give a little background information:

*************

Stock is a village and civil parish[1] in south Essex, England. It is located approximately 6 miles (9.7 km) south of the county town of Chelmsford. The village is in the borough of Chelmsford and in the parliamentary constituency of West Chelmsford.

The village has a direct link to the A12 trunk road via the B1007.

It also has 4 pubs inside the main village, ( the Bear, The Hoop, The Cock and The Bakers Arms) and two other pubs on the outskits ( the Ship and the King's Head) also one other called the three cumpasses, debatable if it is actully in stock) it also has 3 churches. There is a post office and general store, also an Italian restaurant and an off licence.

Formerly half of the village was in the parish of Buttsbury. Further the parish had within its boundaries a hamlet which was a detached part of Orsett. Both of these anomilies have now been resolved.

The village is served by buses of First Group Route 100 Chelmsford to Lakeside and Regal Route 14 Chelmsford to Wickford (Monday to Saturday) and First Group 140 Chelmsford to Basildon (Sundays and Bank Holidays)

The origins of the village are uncertain and are subject to debate. In prehistoric times during the Iron Age period there was a settlement in the village. The village is not mentioned in the Domesday Book, but that does not mean that it did not exist at the time as it may have been an outlying settlement of another place.

William Wilberforce visited the village at Easter in 1786.

The poet Thomas Cowper (pronounced Cooper) was a friend of Willam Unwin, who was the rector from 1769 to 1787. Thomas Cowper poem that is most connected with Stock is Tithing Time at Stock or the Yearly Distress.

Marconi is also known to have visited the village in the 1920s.

Cardinal Basil Hume is also known to have visited the village.

Admiral Sir Vernon Haggard used to live in the village.

The Rev Thomas McMahon Roman Catholic bishop of Brentwood lives in the village and is the parish priest.

The most recent history of the village is The Story of Stock and Buttsbury written by Charles Phillips and is published by Ian Henry Publications. The book came out in 2002.
