Dear Readers,

By the time you receive this issue, a new school year will already be well underway and you’ll be confronting the reality of the swiftly approaching holiday season. If you’re like my mother, all of your holiday presents will have been purchased and most likely, wrapped, ready to be sent off to the four corners of the earth. If you’re like me, you may feel like a deer (a reindeer?) surprised on a country road, staring into the headlights of an approaching car, hypnotized by approaching doom.

Well, maybe it’s not that bad, but I do know that I appreciate anything that’s “Quick & Easy” and can cover up my lack of pre-planning at this time of year. For those of you who are like me, and for those of you who now have nothing to do but wait for Santa, the projects in this issue are sure to delight. We have tree ornaments and Christmas stockings, greeting cards and table decor that say “Happy Holidays” any way you spell it. For a very simple and attractive last-minute gift, I recommend Elizabeth Welch’s Openwork Beret on page 54.

We have the excitement of the “Jiffy Afghan Contest Winners”. Every one of the afghans we received showed creativity and good handwork, so it was with great difficulty that we arrived at our three winners. Congratulations to all the semi-finalists, who will receive a one-year extension of their subscription to “Quick & Easy Crochet”, and to all the top prize-winners as well. Thanks also to Lion Brand Yarn Company for sponsoring this exciting event.

One more thing—hundreds of letters came in in response to a question about the use of a double-ended crochet hook. Many of them asked for more patterns using this implement. We have a beautiful afghan, on page 94, that makes use of this tool. I’m sure you’ll enjoy making it.
