Seller's Description
DESCRIPTION | Good pair of antique English Victorian loaded solid sterling silver candlesticks on bead decorated stepped pedestal bases and sconces. The sconces are removable to help the ejection of old candle stubs. Simply remove the sconce, heat gently and the spent candle stub will slide out as the wax melts. |
SILVERSMITH | J.T, possibly the silversmith John Tucker but more likely a retailer's mark in place of the maker's. |
DATE or HALLMARK | 1893 |
ASSAY OFFICE | London |
WEIGHT in GRAMS | total 767 |
HEIGHT | 5 ¼" x 133mm |
SILVER STANDARD | ·925 sterling silver |
CONDITION | very good, very clean, no rubbed through high points but one little hole towards the edge of one sconce table that is not visible with the sconce in place. This would have been a tiny gas bubble trapped in the original silver ingot and hidden by a few atoms of metal. After years of polishing and cleaning the bubble has been exposed and the irregular, rather grainy texture of the little hole can now be seen. This is more often found on mid-18th century silver when they were still perfecting the molten silver mixes and very unusual in a piece of this date. More an interesting feature than a fault. |
