Bloodshot Iolite Sunstone: Pear Cabochon with Glittery Inclusions; 9+cts; 19x14

A rather recent discovery in the world of gemstones, the beautiful blue body (which gave it its nickname "water sapphire") holds tiny hematite platelets that give off bright, colorful flashes as the stone is turned under lighting. Iolite (cordierite) is also known for its strong dichroism, which makes the stone change color from blue to gray depending on how it is oriented. In this piece, there is a bit of red, which is only found in the more desirable Tanzanian "Bloodshot" stones. There are veils and inclusions along which the platelets form, along with some undercutting typical of this variety. Will be an unusual gem for a collection or jewel design.
