Question From philguk [0] Tue 28 Jul 2020 15:55:51 (EDT) Are these 2volt LEDs or 12volt?
Thanks

Answer From 2011st2011 [+296] Tue 28 Jul 2020 22:32:32 (EDT) Good morning,
They are simple LEDs, one red and one green in the same package, wired in inverse parallel and they must have a resistor wired in series to limit the current flow, otherwise they will be destroyed.
(You seem to be confusing them with LEDs which have circuitry built in to limit the current).
The formula for calculating the current flow is V/R=I, eg. V in volts divided by the Resistance in kilohms (K) = I, the current in milliamps (mA).
Eg. With a 12V supply, 12V / 1K = 12mA 12V / 500R = 24mA
The LEDs have an If max (maximum forward current) of 25mA, so you would normally aim for about 20mA:
An 680R (680 ohms) resistor at 12V = 12 / 0.68 = 17.6mA
A 560R (560 ohms) resistor at 12V = 12 / 0.56 = 21.4mA
Kind regards
Sophie

Question From philguk [0] Wed 29 Jul 2020 03:25:20 (EDT) Thanks. I used to
be able to get
bicolour 12 volt leds
that didn’t need a
resistor, but they
have disappeared it
seems. Ah well.
Thanks for the
response
