Seller's Description

Wyoming's Oldest Building - "Old Bedlam" - Ft. Laramie - 125th Anniversary

Color postcard of Wyoming's Oldest Building, "Old Bedlam" at Ft. Laramie.

The caption reads, “WYOMING’S OLDEST BUILDING ”Old Bedlam," built by the Army in 1849. This structure served as officer quarters and as a post headquarters. It is been restored as it looked during the years 1852-1868, and three of its units refurnished as they appeared in 1855 and 1864. Fort Laramie National Historic Site, Fort Laramie, Wyoming, National Park Service, Department of the Interior.”

Commemorating the 125th Anniversary of Ft. Laramie, Wyoming, as a military post (1849 - 1974). This postcard is stamped with the Utah centennial stamp (Scott #950), the Pony Express centennial stamp (Scott #1154) and the Wyoming Statehood Fiftieth Anniversary stamp (Scott #897). The postcard was postmarked with a pictorial cancel at the Old Bedlam Branch, Ft. Laramie, Wyoming, on June 22, 1974. The cancel also appears on the front of the postcard.

After ceasing operation in 1890, this branch of the Post Office was only re-opened for three days, June 22-24, 1974, to commemorate the anniversary.
