Seller's Description

THE CLASSIC PEDIGREE 1776-1989

By Michael Church

Bound in burgundy leather, with gilt lettering to front and spine, all edges gilt, 480 pages. Landscape 24 x 18cm.

Published by RACING POST LTD. 1990.

The identity of the first winner of a race recognised as a 'Classic' has been lost in the mists of time; it is certain that West Australian had come and gone before his feat of winning the 2,000 Guineas, the Derby and the St Leger was acknowledged by the term 'Triple Crown'.

But the pedigrees of all bar the first winner of what came to be known as the classics have been preserved, and here, for the first time, they are presented in a single volume - a ready reference to the breeding of the most celebrated horses on the British Turf over more than two centuries.  And those records are complemented by the pedigrees of the winners of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, the two most important twentieth century innovations for the hierarchy of the breed.

This valuable work will delight and instruct lovers of the thoroughbred, especially the increasing number who are fascinated by the development of the breed.  The analysis tables provide marvellous insight into the methods by which breeders have fashioned the descendants of the horses who provided fun for the 12th Earl of Derby and his contemporaries more than 200 years ago. - Tony Morris

This is a great shame because the rest of the book is in very good condition and unmarked.  Nonetheless, a superb reference book for anyone wishing to study the history of the classics and classic race winners.
