You are buying a pair of, possibly, American made Cufflinks  that I believe were probably made during the late 1950’s at the time of the exhibition of Mark Rothko’s ‘Red Over Black’ Canvas’ There is no indication of manufacturer anywhere on either cufflink and I very much doubt that they were made in the Rothko studio, but more research is required to establish who made them and why they were made.

These cufflinks, which are in the style of Mark Rothko ‘Light Red On Black’ Canvas, are possibly unique or made for distribution (?) at the time of the opening of the ‘Red on Black’ which were exhibited in the US pavilion at the twenty-ninth Venice Biennale in 1958

The enamel is mounted on bronze plaques and a brass cufflink mechanism is attached to the reverse of the bronze plaque which has then finished in another material, probably enamel.

The enamel surface is uneven and highly reflective in multiple directions and so very difficult to photograph. As far as I can see there are no flaws in the enamel surface, despite what may be considered as a flaw in any one picture.

Research is required to see if there is any direct connection to Rothko, either as an exhibition promotion, an experiment, or as one off ‘gift’ to perhaps a friend.

Mark Rothko

Rothko maintained the social revolutionary ideas of his youth throughout his life. In particular he supported artists' total freedom of expression, which he felt was compromised by the market. This belief often put him at odds with the art world establishment, leading him to publicly respond to critics, and occasionally refuse commissions, sales and exhibitions.

Mark Rothko is regarded as the most intense and spiritually motivated of all the Abstract Expressionist pointers. His mature works, such as Light Red Over Black, consist of simple blocks of semi-translucent point floating against a solid background colour.

By the 1950’s Rothko had matured into his signature style; colourfield paintings. Unlike some of his fellow abstract expressionist artists of the day, he had rejected the physical, sometimes violent methods of paint application in favour of a more spiritual and contemplative form of colour appreciation.

These new paintings were composed of several large rectangular blocks of colour place mostly horizontally on the canvas. Sometimes vivid and latterly quite subdued, these paintings conveyed human emotion in all its splendour; from joy and ecstasy to grief and depression.

Rothko's works invite the spectator to gaze into their ethereal surfaces. He achieved this effect by applying thin washes of point in many layers so that light appears to emanate from their centre. This created a tension between a sense of overall flatness - he used no pictorial devises to suggest perspective - and of infinite depth. Rothko's simple, rectangular forms ore also blurred at the edges to reinforce this sense of weightlessness. To increase the overall impact of his work, Rothko preferred to work in series and to have his works hung together in their own space, thus creating controlled environments.

While Rothko’s friends initially thought that these works may be a step too far for critics and the general public to accept and understand, they couldn’t have been more wrong. Rothko’s works were so much more than colour, they were luminescent and organic, and their soft, blurred edges exuded life force in the emotions they described. This genius work had transcended the need for figures or scenes of nature, it had moved through convention and struck right at the living heart of the viewer.

This completely abstract form of painting is synonymous with the name Rothko and his colour-field canvases are the works which fetch massive prices at auction today, when they reluctantly appear.

I am always concerned that any buyer is entirely happy with a purchase arising from my ‘Description’. However, your bidding price should reflect your expectations given by my ‘Conditions’. All items are entirely described by the written description which starts below the word 'Description' and the photograph(s). The classification of 'new' or 'used' or 'for parts' is entirely overridden by the 'Description' and the 'Photographs'. No refunds are possible for any miss-‘Description’ except where the goods are clearly not those on offer. All goods are purchased entirely at the buyer’s risk and the buyer should satisfy themselves about the detail of any specifications before bidding which requires them to look at all of the 'photographs' and if necessary ask for further information. There is no implied warrantee outside of the ‘Description’ and 'Photographs'. Where a photograph does not show a major physical defect this will be described. All goods, even new ones, will have minor physical defects such as scratches. The buyer must be satisfied that the goods conform to what they want to buy before bidding. Buyers will pay all postage costs relating to any return.

Electrical goods typically sold by my auction are collectors items and do not conform to any current regulations the electrical goods are only sold as suitable for collectors display purposes. When sold as ‘Working’ the meaning of ‘Working’ is that the goods will only conform to the auction ‘Description’ of the function of goods and will not be warranted to conform to the original specification in any way. If described as ‘Working’ this means the goods were tested or examined in some imprecise way some months before sale and they were ‘Working’ then and put into storage. There is no implication that they will work in any way that meets your expectations upon delivery that have not been advised to me before your bidding or buying except as arising from the implication of the previous test or examination. ‘Working’ when applied to mains supplied equipment specifically means that they were tested on a temporary basis by a trained electronics technician. You must have the item tested and if necessary rewired by a person qualified to do so before plugging anything into the mains regardless of your perceived abilities. ‘Untested’ means that no power has been applied or any other means of testing has taken place, however there may be a part physical examination of the goods which forms part of the description. Electrical and electronic goods are sold for restoration and display purposes only. I reserve the right to remove any bidders, who do not meet any of my auction conditions, or who have negative feedback and I reserve the right to block bidders for any reason and advise others that I have done so and why. Where items are supplied as wrapped, or new, and are then opened, or used, or altered in any way by the buyer, there will be no refunds under any circumstances. All items, both abroad and within the UK, are sent through the UK postal system and collection of the goods is not possible. I will arrange for the item to be signed for on delivery. I only use this carrier, I do not use any other standards for delivery.

If you want to know anything, always ask before the auction ends.
