The year after Secretariat retired, American racing gave its heart to another champion; this was the filly RUFFIAN, and although her owner did not wish to run a filly in the Triple Crown races, her fame exceeded that of the colts who contested the classics that year. Like Secretariat, RUFFIAN was not only victorious but dominant.

RUFFIAN possessed size and elegance, speed and power, heart and courage. She had it all, including her own distinctive walk. RUFFIAN's status of remaining unbeaten after ten races; winning her first five races by an average of seven lengths; made her deserving of a challenge against the colts, and she lined up for a match race with that year's Derby winner, FOOLISH PLEASURE.
