Seller's Description

On DVD or VHS: An instant classic and foundation feature for your racing collection!! Picture above is of the great FOREGO after winning the Marlboro Cup by 10 lengths.

The year after Secretariat retired, American racing gave its heart to another champion; this was the filly RUFFIAN, and although her owner did not wish to run a filly in the Triple Crown races, her fame exceeded that of the colts who contested the classics that year. Like Secretariat, RUFFIAN was not only victorious but dominant.

RUFFIAN possessed size and elegance, speed and power, heart and courage. She had it all, including her own distinctive walk. A tribute to RUFFIAN that features her filly Triple Crown victory which is comprised of these three races: The Acorn, the Mother Goose, and the Coaching Club American Oaks. All three races are shown in their entirety, from gate to wire.

RUFFIAN's status of remaining unbeaten after ten races; winning her first five races by an average of seven lengths; made her deserving of a challenge against the colts, and she lined up for a match race with that year's Derby winner, FOOLISH PLEASURE. The intrigue and appeal of match racing is historic - in our time memory pulses with the recollection of MAN O'WAR vs. SIR BARTON; it calls back WAR ADMIRAL/SEABISCUIT and NASHUA/SWAPS - but none of them promised more than this moment. This was one of those rare sporting events that transcend the sports pages - it had the added flavor of women's liberation vs. male chauvinism. This was a horse race that was also a battle of the sexes.

Tension mounted for fans and the horses' connections that sixth day of July, 1975, at Belmont Park; see rare backside grooming scenes of RUFFIAN and pre-race saddling, paddock, and post-parade footage of both horse. Amongst all the media hype build-up of this race and national television, RUFFIAN tragically broke down early in the race and heroic efforts to save her life failed. From the heights of excitement and awe, racing had been slammed to the depths of sorrow. RUFFIAN was a star, one who came along and lit up the skies the way they had never been lit up before - or since.

What RUFFIAN was defies definition - how do you measure that courage, that elegance; how do you chart sheer excellence - it's beyond mere words and figures - beyond science.

Also included is a salute to SEATTLE SLEW featuring his Wood Memorial win, morning workouts, barn scenes, and his Triple Crown win - culminating the dream that captivates all of racing. Watch as the fans at

BelmontPark hail SEATTLE SLEW with maddening applause as he crosses the finish line becoming the 10th Triple Crown winner and the first horse to carry an undefeated record through the Triple Crown races.

Next, some of FOREGO's most famous thundering stretch runs are showcased - watch as FOREGO's loyal legion of fans line up to watch his victories in the 1977 Marlboro Cup with HONEST PLEASURE, 1977 Metropolitan and Woodward Stakes with WILLIE SHOEMAKER on board.

A 45-minute piece that is considered an INSTANT CLASSIC and FOUNDATION FEATURE for every horse racing collection and ESPECIALLY for those who still shed a tear when thinking of that courageous and spirited filly, RUFFIAN - even after all the decades gone by...our hearts will always ache at her tragic and senseless loss.
