An American Tradition
With the coming of summer and our celebration of America’s birthday on July 4th, we can all enjoy reflecting on our individual heritage.
For some, a look at their roots may evoke memories of generations past, conjure visions of special places or events, or stir thoughts of the future for their children.
When I think of my ancestors’ role in the growth of this great nation, I am reminded often of their hard work, self-sufficiency, and creativity when faced with challenges.
My family heritage begins in Wales and reveals a number of colonists in the 18th century who came to America to establish their trade as carpenters, masons, teachers, and ministers.
They have left tangible records of their lives in some of the intricate woodwork, samplers, and sermons that they created and that I now proudly display as family heirlooms in my home.
I treasure a campaign chest constructed with a detailed pattern of carefully inlaid woods made by a town sheriff who was a member of my family living during the early 1800’s.
A sampler stitched by 11-year-old Charlotte in 1798 hangs safely behind glass in my library.
A tooled-leather diary dating from the Civil War era inscribed with the calligraphy and poetry of Union soldiers who were comrades- in-arms with one of my ancestors sits today on a special shelf in my home.
I can recall visiting small New England towns where some of my ancestors struggled to shape their lives long ago. And I am awed by the homes they built from the ground up along the coast of Maine.
In a little cottage on Cape Cod I can almost “see” one of my great-great-grandmothers creating the colorful afghan that my nine-year- old daughter now has hanging in her bedroom.
And when I make my pilgrimage to Brandy Station, Virginia, I can picture that ancestor who was a bridge builder for the Union Army lending his skills to a great American cause.
As I look to the next century, when my daughter will graduate with the high school class of 2001, I am filled with hope that the country she inherits will be in some way bettered by her contributions.
Sarah enjoys painting and sculpting and was delighted recently when asked by a teacher to prepare a time capsule of her artwork to be opened in about twenty years, when she is grown up and her own son or daughter is then in the fourth grade.
I am encouraged that Sarah shows such enthusiasm for sharing her creative enterprises with her family—present and future.
It would appear that Sarah is yet another link in a long chain of creative people in my family’s history.
This July 4th, I wish all of you the same joy in realizing how creative the people, events and possibilities have been, are, and will be in the growth of your family heritage.
