FROM THE EDITOR
SPINNING YARNS
Last week, my building superintendent’s six-year-old decided to come and visit “the magazine lady”. She knocked timidly on my door and asked if she could stay a while. After some questioning, I found out that she wanted to knit an afghan. I suggested that she try making a set of squares which she could then sew together to make her afghan. I dug out a pair of spare needles and gave her two balls of yarn. As I watched, she deftly proceeded to knit her first square.
While she was knitting, I remembered that at the same age, my mother taught me to knit and cork (knitting on a spool with four holes). I made doll clothes and endless corked ropes that I used to decorate my doll houses.
It saddens me when I see children glued to the television set. Crafts of any nature are an excellent form of expression for a child’s creativity. They develop ingenuity and a sense of accomplishment. I maybe a bleeding heart, but I feel strongly that embroidery, knitting, sewing, woodworking and crafts should be included in school learning programs. I realize that budget cutbacks make this difficult.
There isn’t an easy answer to this dilemma. I hope that each of you will pass on to your children your love of arts and crafts. Good pastimes like good news spreads quickly. If you can afford the time, try hosting a craft circle or introducing crafts at your child’s birthday party. It works! I know because I’ve tried.
It is worth the effort to create constructive programs for your children. As an adult, I know that I’m never bored because I can always knit, crochet or sew. Passing on a hobby is a good way to save your child from becoming a television addict. Our time on this planet is too short to let it dribble by.
Think about it!
