FROM THE EDITOR

SPINNING YARNS

Editors can at times be compared to magicians in the way we work with images, conjure up moods, change the weather and how we dare to compete with the unpredictable moods of Mother Nature.

During the later part of April and early May, I was trying to complete the photography for this issue. I wanted something different… a special feeling in the shots. The hint of summer’s warmth brought images of steamy downtown streets, sun glazed buildings and a bright idea. I decided to go on location in downtown Toronto to shoot all our garment photography. As the July/August issue is traditionally a mixed bag of fashion influences (too late a true summer issue and too early for fall fashions), I had developed a menage of mid and late summer fashions that required the influence of sunny weather to be properly displayed.

After discussing possible locations with CRAFTS Plus fashion photographer, Richard Allan, I decided that on the old St. Lawrence Market building and its adjacent park for the photography. There I could achieve (hopefully) the feeling inherent in both a mid and late summer day.

After booking Richard’s time, the models and coordinating the outfits, the weather gave out. Television weather reporters predicted thunderstorms and rain showers for the day I had picked for our photo session. Visions of 40 days and 40 nights of rain danced in my head as I waited. I could shoot in the studio but, I had my heart set on the summer feeling that can only be achieved out-of-doors.

As the day broke, it was both overcast and dismal but it wasn’t raining. I had booked the models on a weather permit (I could cancel up to one hour before the arranged time). Slowly the hours rolled by and still no rain. About one hour before “D-Day” the sun peaked out from behind the clouds. I roared down to Richard’s studio and the photo session proceeded. The natural light was perfect and as the afternoon wore on I knew the photographs would be some of the best ever printed in CRAFTS Plus.

Had it rained we would have taken the photographs in a studio setting...I’m really glad we didn’t. To try and create the feeling displayed in the photographs that were taken would have been impossible.

The magic hasn’t worn off, it has just changed a little!

Happy Summer.
