FROM THE EDITOR
It may be forty below, bitterly cold and snowing.. .but, now is the time to think spring! The newest in the spring/summer colour and fashion forecasts have just arrived, warming the wintery air. We’ve summarized them for you in this issue of CRAFTS Plus. This gives you the leading edge when you start to plan your spring knitting and sewing.
With the new fashion colours in mind, Designer Melinda Masters has prepared a machine knit sweater (with complete pattern instructions for hand knitting) using the latest in spring fashion yarns. Softly styled and very feminine, Melinda’s sweater should brighten even the weariest of winter hearts.
With hearts in mind, I’ve found (with the aid of my contributing editors and writers) some very special crafts designed around the heart motif. This St. Valentine’s Day, craft your own special way of saying that you care with a potpourri heart, heart shaped pillow, quick quilt or decorative painted heart.
Photographer Richard Allan has successfully captured the fanciful atmosphere of Valentine’s Day in our cover photo. Our model is wearing a 1950’s inspired mohair, lace and ribbon sweater designed exclusively for CRAFTS Plus by Kinsie Wool Shops. She’s tying the last strand on a quick quilt designed specially for this issue of CRAFTS Plus.
If you are an avid crochet enthusiast, you will be delighted with our cozy, crocheted sweater from Bouquet Yams of Listowel. I am in the process of making the sweater for myself and I can assure you that it is a wonderfully simple pattern to follow. (If you are fond of a challenge, try our Crocheted Daffodil Tea Mat!)
For this issue, I travelled north to the tiny village of Bala, Ontario, located in the picturesque cottage country of Muskoka. There, I paid a visit to Jean MacDonald of Hemlock Creations. Jean specializes in “Cat Crafts and Containers”. Her story is fascinating because she has successfully turned her love for quilting and sewing into a profitable cottage industry. Jean’s philosophy should interest anyone who has considered turning their craft into a profitable business.
After reading about Jean, you may want to introduce yourself to our new section, ‘‘Projects for Profit”. Over the span of this year, you will find articles, business plans, project ideas and tips to help you plan your own small business.
