Note from the Editor:

While we now craft for relaxation and pleasure, in times past, a woman’s ability to stitch a flawless sampler or paint a smear-free theorem was an important measure of her social value.

For many people, crafts provide an escape from their work lives, a relaxing hobby after a 40- hour week in front of a computer or on their feet.
But most of the traditional or historical crafts certainly didn’t begin as idle pastimes. Most objects were made to fill important functions, but even those crafts that were purely decorative objects also were taken quite seriously in earlier centuries.
Being skilled with a needle or in other domestic arts was considered so important for young women that well into the 19th century, finishing schools for girls placed as much, if not more, emphasis on homemaking skills as on reading and arithmetic.
Three of the crafts we explore in this issue— theorem painting, paper quilling, and hardanger embroidery—were taught at some point in such schools. For these students, covering a tea caddy with a mosaic of quilled paper or stenciling a theorem may have created more worry than pleasure. How well they executed these projects were measures of their social standing and acceptability. Parents proudly hung needlework samplers or theorems, displaying a daughter’s domestic talents and therefore her potential as the ideal wife.
It’s interesting now to look at the old samplers or paintings and consider the effort that went into each stitch or brushstroke. It’s even better to be able to enjoy creating these crafts today without such pressures.
