HISTORY
The Canadian Airborne Regiment (CAR), traced its history to the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion and also drew some inspiration and esprit de corps from the Canadian-U.S. First Special Service Force (Devil's Brigade).
The 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion was formed in July 1942 and disbanded in September 1945. During WW2, they were awarded the Battle Honours, Normandy Landing, Dives Crossing, The Rhine and N.W. Europe 1944-45.
In April 1968, the CAR were formed, adopting the traditions and badge based on their forebears. The modern regiment had 3 Commando's, the 1st, was affiliated to the Royal 22nd Regiment, the 2nd, affiliated to the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry and the 3rd to the Royal Canadian Regiment, from which they obtained trained volunteers.
The CAR were part of the Special Service Force, Canada's airborne brigade formation, which has itself been disbanded.
On disbandment in 1995, the 3rd Battalion's of the R22R, PPCLI and RCR, each formed a Parachute Company to continue an operational airborne infantry force within the Canadian Army.
In addition to these 3 airborne company's, although not associated to the CAR in 2005 the Canadian Forces raised the Canadian Special Operations Regiment (CSOR), to provide special forces response and support to Canadian Forces and allied Special Forces operations. CSOR have an airborne capability and recruit from the Army, Royal Canadian Navy and Royal Canadian Air Force.
CSOR also operate in support of Joint Task Force 2, (JTF 2), similar to the British, Special Forces Support Group and Australian 2nd Commando Regiment who support the Special Air Service of both countries and the U.S. 75th Ranger Regiment who support American special forces on operations.
