Material: 14ct Gold Equivalent SOLID Electrum (60% gold, 40% silver)
Style: Roman Toga Pin - very rare in this sort of quality with through loop and Crescent Moon and Celestial design.  Never seen another and probably never will.
Age: Roman Empire c200 CE - UK found in Corinium area.
Condition: Very Good for age.  All parts present and fully functional.
Fastening: Pin and twist through torque loop.
Hallmark: N/A
Origin: UK
Fully appraised and authenticated by Sotheby's.

About Electrum:
Electrum (aka Green Gold) is a naturally found alloy of gold and silver.  It was exensively mined by the Egyptians and Romans and used in their jewellery.  It is a truly beautiful metal and it is just a shame it is not used today.
XRF analysis of this sample demonstrates a 60/40 ratio so a little over 14ct Gold.

Important info about Brooches / Pins:
Many brooches were made long before the Hallmarking Act came into force and though we have been hallmarking items in the UK since the 1300s this was not the norm until recently.  Many items were handmade by the "family jeweler" and never went off to be assayed.  Anything made pre 1920 does not need to be hallmarked by law.
