Seller's Description
This is a postcard showing people “on the road to Fern Gully, St Anns”, Jamaica. It was published by Duperley & Sons, Kingston, and posted in 1919.
The sender appears to be a Royal Navy sailor. He is writing from the light cruiser HMS Constance (see more here), and says, “I am now on a ship from Halifax to New York escorting the Prince of Wales but he leaves for England on Tuesday and we return to Bermuda”. The Prince of Wales at this time later became King Edward VIII - this journey was probably at the end of his visit to Canada. HMS Constance was then serving with the 8th Light Cruiser Squadron on the North America and West Indies Station, based at Bermuda.
The card is in fair condition with some wear to the corners and edges, and some marks on the back.
Please see some other naval items, currently on sale, as well as other Jamaican cards.
