Seller's Description
CORGI AA27902 1/48 MCDONNELL DOUGLAS F-4K PHANTOM FG.1 RAF NO.111 SQN XV592/L RAF LEUCHARS FIFE SCOTLAND 1970'S - LIMITED STOCK
Although the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom was initially seen as an American aircraft pressed upon the RAF in the late 1960s, it soon proved its worth. Rugged, versatile, and exceptionally capable, the Phantom quickly established itself as one of the most effective multi-role aircraft in British service.
Phantom FG.1 XV592 holds particular historical significance as the final Phantom built for the Royal Navy. Serving aboard HMS Ark Royal with No.892 Naval Air Squadron, it carried the distinctive black Omega tail marking, proudly signalling the unit’s role as the Fleet Air Arm’s last Phantom squadron.
With the retirement of Ark Royal at the end of the 1970s, XV592 was transferred to the RAF and stationed at Leuchars in Scotland. From there, it assumed an air defence role, intercepting Soviet aircraft and safeguarding British airspace over the North Sea. Its new RAF camouflage scheme contrasted starkly with the Extra Dark Sea Grey and white colours of its naval days, giving the Phantom a more menacing profile while still remaining hugely popular with enthusiasts.
Over its career, XV592 showcased two of the most iconic and admired colour schemes ever applied to a British Phantom — a fitting legacy for this Anglo-American classic.
McDonnell Douglas F-4K Phantom FG.Mk 1
Designed as a fleet defence fighter for the US Navy, the F-4 Phantom was first flown on May 27, 1958. This twin-engine, long-range all-weather fighter/bomber proved highly adaptable and served in the Marine Corps and the US Air Force as well as in the Navy. During the Vietnam War, it was the principal air superiority fighter for the Navy and the Air Force and was also used for reconnaissance and ground attack. The Phantom continued to serve well into the 1970s and 1980s and even flew missions during the first Gulf War. Finally phased out by the F-14, F-16 and F/A-18, the Phantom was retired in 1996.
