"Calbe Payne, Wilton House, High St, Cranbrook, Kent, Engineer & Surveyor, do hereby declare the nature of this invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, to be particularly described and ascertained in and by the following statement: This invention relates to motor or self propelled vehicles or stationary machinery wherein a belt is employed running on grooved pulleys to allow the motor or machinery to be disconnected at pleasure and also to provide means for varying the speed of the vehicle, machinery or the like instantly and without stopping the vehicle machinery or the like..."
