Patent No. 16,665 A.D.1890 Improvements in Fitting Pedals to the Cranks of Velocipedes

"We, George Palmer Thomson and William Gilbert James, both of 39 Chalk Farm Road, London, N.W., Cycle Manufacturers, do hereby declare the nature of this invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, to be particularly described and ascertained in and by the following statement: Whereas in fitting pedal pins to the cranks of velocipedes, one end of the pin is passed through a slot in the crank; a nut is then screwed on and locked to make it secure.  This method is defective; the nut being liable to work loose by the vibration of the velocipede and, in chain driven machines, the nut frequently cataches the cahin when  the chain happens to be slack..."
